Age and eligibility
Enrolments are open to students aged 16 and over. You need to be 18 to serve, sell or supply alcohol in NSW.
Identification

USI
Have your Unique Student Identifier ready and make sure your enrolment details match your ID. A valid USI is needed for this online RSA course in NSW. Create or find your USI.

What is RSA in New South Wales?
RSA means Responsible Service of Alcohol. It’s the training that teaches you how to serve alcohol safely and step in when a situation could put customers or staff at risk.
The nationally recognised unit is SITHFAB021, Provide responsible service of alcohol. What’s also required depends on your state and the specific duties of your role.
Who needs RSA in NSW?
RSA is required for most jobs involving the sale, supply or service of alcohol in NSW. Completing training does not remove employment age restrictions or additional requirements for particular roles.
Your employer should confirm the requirements for your duties. Additional management, security or licensed roles can have separate conditions.
What will you learn?
Learn about standard drinks, alcohol-related harm, signs of intoxication, age checks and situations where service must be refused. Practise communicating clearly and responding professionally to difficult interactions.
Assessment checks your knowledge and ability to apply the required skills. Completing the learning material alone is not enough for certification.

NSW RSA competency is normally renewed every five years through the required refresher process. Keep your details current and follow the renewal instructions before your competency expires.
Before working in another jurisdiction, check its recognition rules and your employer’s requirements. You may need additional local training or certification.
Online RSA NSW Frequently Asked Questions
Can I complete the course at my own pace?
No, NSW RSA has to be live and trainer-led at a scheduled time, self-paced isn’t accepted by Liquor & Gaming NSW. You’ll join a real-time online session, work through the material with your trainer, and complete your assessment during that same session, not whenever suits you.

What identification and USI do I need?
For training day, you just need one form of valid photo ID, a passport, driver’s licence or proof of age card. You’ll also need your Unique Student Identifier (USI) ready before training, you can create one free if you don’t already have it.
Once you pass the assessment, you will need to take your interim certificate to Service NSW, and you need 100 points of ID to collect your physical competency card.
What equipment do I need?
For this online RSA course, you only need a laptop or desktop with a working camera and microphone, plus a stable internet connection.
What certificate will I receive?
You’ll get your Statement of Attainment the same day, right after you pass the assessment. That’s an interim certificate for NSW, you’ll then apply separately to Service NSW for your physical competency card, which is what you’ll actually need on the job.
Will I need refresher training?
Your NSW RSA competency card is valid for 5 years. Before it expires, you’ll renew it through Liquor & Gaming NSW’s online refresher process rather than redoing the full course from scratch.
Can I use my RSA certificate interstate?
Yes, in most cases. Your NSW RSA is accepted in QLD, SA, WA, TAS, ACT and NT, sometimes with a quick registration step.
Victoria’s the one exception, it requires its own bridging module no matter where you originally trained.
